FAQ

The more you know about Invisalign®, the better you will be able to determine if this system is right for you. If you have questions after browsing this page, please feel free to contact us directly. We are happy to assist you.

What problems can Invisalign® correct?

Some of the common problems that may be corrected with Invisalign® include crowding, spacing, and bite issues such as mild open bite, cross bite, under bite, or over bite.

Why might I choose Invisalign®?

There are several advantages to the Invisalign® system. This method of correcting misalignment involves the creation of a number of aligner trays. Aligners are worn on upper and lower arches. They fit right over your teeth. This is different from conventional braces, which require you to wear brackets that stick out from the surface, potentially catching on cheeks and lips. Invisalign® aligners are made of strong, clear plastic that is barely seen when you speak and smile. They may be removed so that you can enjoy meals without food being lodged in brackets or wires. Aligners are also removed for brushing and flossing, decreasing the risk of cavities and gum irritation.

How can aligners straighten my teeth?

In the same manner as braces, Invisalign® aligners place consistent pressure onto teeth to move them where they need to be. The force applied to teeth continues through each set of aligners. As you change from one set to the next, pressure will focus precisely where movement is desired.

Do aligners contain Bisphenol-A (BPA)?

Invisalign® aligners are BPA-free, made of USP Class VI medical grade resins. The material used to create aligners has been thoroughly tested for biocompatibility, meaning that it will not irritate tissues in the mouth or body.

How long do I have to wear aligners?

Aligners should be worn at all times except for meals and oral care. Each set of aligners is worn for two weeks before you switch to the next set. The overall course of treatment can range from six to eighteen months, depending on the severity of misalignment and on compliance with instructed wear. If you do not wear your aligners as directed, treatment time may be extended in order to achieve the desired result.

Can my child wear Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is designed for teens and adults. It is not suitable for patients until the permanent teeth have all grown in. Younger patients may have other options for early orthodontic intervention. Consult with Dr. Tuli about an orthodontic consultation.

Will my speech be affected by Invisalign® aligners?

Like braces and other orthodontic treatments, it is possible that you will notice a slight change in speech when you first wear aligners. The reason for this is that aligners feel new to the tongue and to muscles in the cheeks and lips. Within a day or two, your speech should return to normal.

Can I chew gum during Invisalign® treatment?

Nothing but water should be consumed while you are wearing aligners. Gum, in particular, will stick to aligners. Before any snack or meal, just remove aligners and put in a safe place.

Will smoking affect my aligners?

Yes. It is possible that smoking will cause stains on aligners. We encourage patients not to smoke at all during or even after Invisalign® treatment due to the implications for gum disease, oral cancer, and other health concerns.

Is Invisalign® treatment painful?

While Invisalign® has been said to be more comfortable than braces due to the absence of brackets, the underlying premise of correction is to move teeth with gentle force. The pressure that is applied through aligners may cause slight discomfort for the first couple days of a new tray, but most patients find this easily tolerable. As aligners are changed throughout the course of treatment, pressure may come and go as teeth shift.

Do I need to clean my aligners?

Each set of aligners is worn for two weeks. We recommend gently brushing aligners at the same time you brush and floss your teeth. No toothpaste is necessary and is actually discouraged, as abrasive particles may scratch the clear plastic. Cleaning aligners regularly with lukewarm water and brushing will keep them from becoming cloudy and developing a foul odor.

Will my insurance cover the cost of Invisalign®?

We find that many insurance companies extend their existing orthodontic benefits to Invisalign® patients. Every situation is different. Our staff can help you determine if your treatment would be covered under your insurance plan. We also offer options for financing to help you get the treatment you need.
